NEW ENGLAND — The New England Patriots held a news conference Thursday morning to announce the team has placed rookie defensive tackle Deion Jones on injured reserve, and the team is expected to place rookie defensive end/linebacker Deion Smith on injured-reserve with a foot injury.
Jones and Smith are expected to miss a minimum of three weeks.
They were not in the locker room Thursday.
Smith was injured in Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the first of five career games in which he missed time.
The Patriots were expected to be active at practice Wednesday, but Smith’s absence was announced before practice.
The team said in a statement that Jones and he were both “day-to-day.”
Smith did not practice Thursday and will have an MRI.
He is a fifth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills out of Clemson in 2016.
He played in all 16 games in his rookie season, recording two sacks and three tackles.
Smith also has three interceptions, a forced fumble and five passes defensed.
He has also started six games, recording five tackles.
