A baby possums bite is causing concern for the baby sharks in the water in WA, prompting police to investigate.
A baby possumpet was spotted biting the head of a baby shark while the shark was swimming in the Swan River near Maribyrnong in WA’s north on Saturday.
It is believed the baby possumper was feeding on the shark’s skin, and that the shark may have been injured, said police.
“Police are investigating whether this was a human bite or a child’s play, but it is inhumane behaviour,” Detective Inspector Chris O’Keefe said.
“We have been told by the mother that she was feeding the baby shark’s belly.”
Police are appealing for information to identify the mother, who has been described as a Caucasian woman, aged about 40 to 45 years.
Police are urging anyone who has witnessed the incident to contact them.
